* Please Don't Lie to Me Much

Oh how we tend to wish ourselves
Such extraordinary pain
With our naοve failure to recognize Love,
And all of the heartaches it brings

We willingly accept the many loving lies
Our lovers spill from rose petal lips
As we empty our half filled glass of tears
Upon the dead flowers of heartless quips

Praying for a cure
From the cancer that grows
Be it neither a stone or a pound
More than our drowning need to know

How deep the water is...

A Healthy Diet

The scales on my eyes now removed
I can see the error of my ways
I had protected myself from infectious diseases
Yet continually ignored and neglected my inner most being
Always concerned about bacteria or viruses invading the host
Colds and influenza taking up permanent residence
I began eating plenty of vegetables and fruit
Handfuls of supplements I would digest and pass
Within so many pools of expensive green urine
That even my bladder had to laugh…
When in the end all that really mattered
Was that my sins had been washed clean
By the blood the Savior had shed for me…

Death of a Salesman

With the costly stain of blood on my mercenary soul
I prayed for God to release me from our contract.
I no longer wished to participate in the death of a people
who were too ignorant to comprehend past discrepancies
and yet so willing to accept the tainted words and slogans
of false prophets as proof positive that all would be well;
if only we would believe that everything in life is….

BBW and Canasta

Mom never went on tabloid talk shows
appearing in her underwear and cursing at our Dad
or any of his many 'Mousey' secretaries
Maybe because back then there was no 'Springer'
She would air our laundry on a clothesline
hung out to dry under blue cloudless skies
where fresh air would permeate a clean scent
into everything....no matter how conspicuous the odor
Sometimes she would get it out of her system
over a game of Canasta and mint juleps with the girls
where a more than adequate alibi for her betrayals
was the intoxicating gossip qualities of the crθme de menthe.....
It was there.....hiding behind our living room sofa
where I first learned it was because of my silent nature
some of our neighbors thought I was retarded
retarded.... a perfectly appropriate word in the Fifties....
I thought about jumping out and shouting something
but that seemed even more retarded to me at the time
So I crouched there....sometimes behind the piano
which was about all I could do with a piano
that didn't involve heart and soul or chopsticks....
sometimes I'd hide behind Ms. Prichard's
most amble and intriguing Renaissance derriθre
where a small parting of the drapes would fulfill
or soon dictate most of my adolescent fantasies
involving older women and adult alcoholic beverages....
Ahhhh.....what good times those were....
I was young and twice as smart as I am today.....
Now that I speak my mind.....
