Though It's Been Awhile Now
Though it's been awhile now since I was a boy
My journey in life a memory to enjoy
Many the highway and byway I've driven up and down
Since I left Claraghatlea a mile from Millstreet Town
I do live far south of Hibernia's shore
And old Clara hill above high Claramore
But in memory in Springtime I walk in the old fields again
And I hear the birds sing in the drizzling rain
And where the stream rapids are babbling along
The dark brown white breasted dipper is on song
The great gift of memory a marvellous thing
In far leafy groves I can hear the birds sing
And bluebells and snowdrops and primroses to be seen
Blooming on the ditch of the pebbly bohreen.

Though I've Never Bothered To Ask Him
Though I've never bothered to ask him he told me of how he purchased a brand new car
And how he has been promoted to a managerial position in the company he works for up the corporate ladder he is climbing far
What can I say to him but well done since I'm not into dragging tall poppies down
There are plenty more willing to do that no shortage of them in the town
In truth I'd prefer not to meet him though success stories are nice to hear
The fact that he talks of self and self only to others himself he does not endear
To tell of his achievements does make him happy we are what we are does seem true
And for his material successes some credit at least he is due
To talk of self is not unnatural in moderation most things seem okay
But too much self praise can become boring that's how it does seem anyway
He is not one that I meet often of which I am happy to say
As such people I do not find interesting they never help to make my day
But it takes all kinds to make up humanity and we all look at life differently
And if in a big way he is into self promotion then that too is okay with me.

Though Life Seems Too Short
Though life seems too short to be burdened by care
Truly carefree people one can say are rare
The sound of laughter to it has a beautiful ring
And with it joy it never does fail to bring
Laughter is the best of medicine some are known to say
And lucky are those who can laugh their cares away
And pity the wealthiest one in the town
Who cannot smile and by cares is weighted down
It is true that worrying does give rise to stress
And lucky are those who know of some happiness
In their lives since happiness is a rare gift
And a great help when the spirits are in need of a lift
And though life's never easy and not always fair
I do envy those who can rise above despair.

Though Little About Nature
Though little about Nature I can claim to know
I can distinguish a currawong from a crow
And I can tell a wallaby from a kangaroo
Or a rosella or lorikeet from a cockatoo
But such common knowledge is no boost to my self esteem
For everyone knows of such things it does seem
And though we learn a little from her every day
Nature from us her secrets keep hidden away
In a bog or a swamp a cacti will not grow
And a trout likes to spawn where the river rapids flow
This is basic knowledge on Nature to most
And surely not something of which one should boast
The one who can grow a giant seed from a tiny dark seed
My knowledge of her very basic indeed
Compared to her's human achievements seem small
The amazing one who grows food for us all.
