0358 One for Bill

Redheads, with their fiery hair
oft have a temper that can scare.
Can God and Nature so conspire
to scarify with hair and fire?

First Love

My first true love was only seven
Her hair was fair, her eyes were blue,
She was an angel straight from heaven,
We shared a desk at infants’ school.

Beneath its lid our knees were pressed
Together tightly, warm and friendly
Like two little birds in their own nest,
She was my love, I loved her tenderly.

The golden hairs upon her arm
Even today I can recall,
That clear skin and gentle charm
Of my young sweetheart, Ann Goodall.

A Softer Place

i've held this breath
since i blew that permanent sigh
in your temporary direction...
did i turn and look
just before the knob-
just to see your shining hair
skin, eyes-
for just a shining moment?
oh, yes.

if circumstance leaves it there,
i would have to pretend
that it had been some softer place
that this all had occurred:
like the bay,
or the park, or another-
where i had,
for the second time,
see your hair
skin
eyes
but in the sun this time-
for a second-
oh, yes.

Worry

this land of lost loves and lowlifes
and strands of her hair like dangling needles
these angels weeping midnight
that streaks across their faces
running like a river
but never keeping up
she cops she's tired
along with other vagabond excuses
while monkey-fucking cigarettes from passers-by
the street ties up her hair like ribbons
she's a rodent
in some shame-numb collective
shot from the planet
stubbing her toes on stars
